It was out of a 89 7.3L. I then switched the housings ( a little tricky but not bad). The problem was in 88 ford switched to a dual mass fly wheel and dampered clutch ( if you don't have it you get excesssive gear noise). 88 is when they started using the ZF 5 speed. I have a sheet that says the wide ratio was an option with the diesel. I believe the ZF is rated at 350 ft-lbs. For comparison, the NP435 ratios are: 6.69, 3.34, 1.79, 1.00, rev- 8.26.Aug 8, 2023 · Hey all, I got a 92 7.3 with a zf5, and am working on my father’s 96 7.3 that has a swapped S 5-42 ZF5 from 1989 (auto from the factory). It has always had a way shorter range of motion, as well as when the master cylinder pushrod is all the way out and the clutch is in its resting position, the pedal is way lower than the brake, doesn’t seem to ever go all the way back out vs the clutch ... Here's my responses in order. It's possible like most things, but expensive and not easy since you will need two transmissions to accomplish this. Also diesel ZFs had a close ratio gearset, which is not ideal for a gas engine. You also run into issues with input shaft differences, clutch choice, etc.Functionally the transmission performs a it it should, shifts fine in all gears and engaging reverse is not a problem. So I need some ideas as to *** is going on here. It was out of a 89 7.3L. I then switched the housings ( a little tricky but not bad).
